38 people filled the seats at V.I.R. L’s Gabriola library, as we explored the cosmic relationship between the earth, its humans and stars. Sponsored by Spirit Quest, the Gabriola Ecumenical Society, this award-winning film tells the epic story of cosmic, Earth and human transformation from The Big Bang to today. Before the film began, Maureen Wild provided context for this film by sharing some of her personal story about her own exploration of the cosmos, and provided background to the individuals who produced and narrated the film, specifically evolutionary philosopher Brian Thomas Swimme, Yale historian of religions Mary Evelyn Tucker, and Thomas Berry, the man whose view of our relationship with the cosmos inform the basic tenants of this new creation story.
The film takes place on numerous locales on the Greek island of Samos during one day from dawn to dusk. The outstanding photography and the narrator’s ability to use metaphor to explain the processes involved in this science made difficult concepts easy to understand. Using the inflation and deflation of a balloon to describe the precision of the rate of an expanding universe and ordering a series of vegetables to represent the solar system are just two examples. While we may not have completely answered the questions of who we are or why we’re here, everyone left with greater insight into our connection to the cosmos, the planet, and our duty to sustain Earth.
